Set in 1925, Marseilles, France, the film follows the story of a French Foreign Legion brigade posted to a remote outpost in Northern Africa. The frontier fort was built over a three-month period on the steps of the Sahara desert, Morocco. The majority of the period sets including the cabaret club, train station and bordello interior were built in Tangiers and at the Atlas film studios, Ouarzazate.
